The Rise of Skywalker features the iconic opening crawl sequence like the rest of the movies in the franchise. However, this one proves to be a bit more confusing than we've seen in the past. A portion of the crawl reads: "The dead speak! The galaxy has heard a mysterious broadcast, a threat of REVENGE in the sinister voice of the late EMPEROR PALPATINE." This isn't a spoiler since we knew Palpatine was returning, but what we didn't know was that the popular video game Fortnite was about to become official Star Wars canon. There are SPOILERS for The Rise of Skywalker below, so read ahead at your own risk.

While we see in The Rise of Skywalker that Emperor Palpatine has broadcast his return to the galaxy, we never hear it in the movie. Actually, when it comes to Palpatine, we're not really told a whole lot about anything, but that's a story for another time... Come to find out, gamers who took part in the special Fortnite screening of a Star Wars 9 clip last weekend were treated to the missing broadcast from ol' Palpatine.

That's right, Fortnite is now official Star Wars canon thanks to last weekend's event. After the clip played, players watched an animated J.J. Abrams jump into the Millennium Falcon and take off while some TIE Fighters lingered. Right after everybody is gone, we can hear Emperor Palpatine broadcast his return. "At last the work of generations is complete," the villain says. "The great error is corrected. The day of victory is at hand. The day of revenge. The day of the Sith!"

This broadcast was essentially what kicked off The Rise of Skywalker and found the Resistance spooked. While this missing dialogue would have been a nice addition to the movie, it wasn't essential, especially considering all of things that are left out, like how Emperor Palpatine returns in the first place. We all thought, along with George Lucas, that he was space dust after getting tossed into the Death Star's reactor before it blew to pieces over the moons of Endor. Whatever the case may be, he's back, or he was back. Another one on the list of the many confusing things about The Rise of Skywalker.

The Rise of Skywalker and Fortnite event got off to a rocky start and wasn't the smoothest event, but Star Wars fans were still treated to a clip from early on in the movie. Now, the final installment in the Skywalker Saga is in theaters for all to see and take in and the reviews have been mixed, which is putting it lightly. J.J. Abrams made some controversial decisions to move the story along, while neglecting different aspects that were introduced in the movie. Regardless, Fortnite holds the key to at least one of the many mysteries surrounding the threequel.
