Frasier star Kelsey Grammer has not ruled out bringing members of the Cheers cast into the revival. Speaking with MovieWeb’s own Jeffrey Heller, Grammer was asked whether there is any chance of seeing the likes of Ted Danson’s Sam Malone, George Wendt’s Norm Peterson, Rhea Perlman’s Carla Tortelli, Woody Harrelson’s Woody Boyd, or any of the Cheers gang, with the actor assuring fans that the door is open to such crowd-pleasing cameos.
“Good Lord, you know there's always a chance, but I haven't really thought about it. If it comes up and it’s entrenched into a storyline, yeah, probably. You never know.”
Grammer’s iconic Dr. Frasier Crane was born from the world of Cheers, created as a spin-off of NBC’s hugely popular sitcom. The standalone series, Frasier, continues the story of psychiatrist Frasier Crane as he returns to his hometown of Seattle and starts building a new life as a radio show host. Living with his cranky, ex-cop father, Martin (John Mahoney), and hanging out with his brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce), who is even more Frasier-like than Frasier himself, the series came to an end back in 2004. During its run, Frasier was critically acclaimed, with the show itself and the cast winning thirty-seven Primetime Emmy Awards and winning the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series for five consecutive years.
Several characters from Cheers made appearances throughout the 11 seasons of Frasier, and no doubt audiences would erupt into cheering and applause should any of the legendary actors reprise their roles for the Paramount+ revival.
The Original Frasier Cast Will Not be Regulars in the Revival
While we may see appearances from the Cheers cast, it is looking less-and-less likely that the supporting cast from the original Frasier will have much to do with the revival. Recent reports have stated that the likes of David Hyde Pierce, Jane Leeves and Peri Gilpin will not be series regulars when Frasier Crane returns. And while they could make brief appearances, this is sure to come as something of a disappointment to fans of the original.
Details of what the Frasier revival will involve, and where it will find the blustery psychiatrist, are currently being kept under wraps, though Kelsey Grammer has revealed that the character will have found some luck where his finances are concerned. "He thinks he's gonna go off and do one thing, and sure enough, his life takes him in another direction,” Grammer said. “And he ends up rich beyond his dreams."
The Frasier revival is a project that Grammer has been working on for years, and was officially given the greenlight last month. The new adventures of Frasier comes from writers Chris Harris (How I Met Your Mother) and Joe Cristalli (Life In Pieces), with Grammer, Harris, and Cristalli on board as executive producers alongside Tom Russo and Jordan McMahon. CBS Studios will produce the Frasier revival in association with Grammer's Grammnet NH Productions.
The Frasier revival does not yet have a release date, but it will debut on Paramount+ who have officially given the sequel a series order of 10 episodes.
