With every successful movie comes the obvious question of when will it be given a sequel? Ryan Reynolds's movie Free Guy was a big success when it was released last year, pulling in a gross of $331 million worldwide and now ready to be a hit all over again to Disney+ audiences in the U.S. after being released on the streaming platform to subscribers. Directed by Shawn Levy, the movie stars Reynolds as a background character in a video game who becomes aware that his world is not what he is programmed to believe. With a sterling supporting cast of Jodie Comer, Channing Tatum, Taiki Waititi and Joe Keery, it is no surprise that fans have been asking if there will be a sequel, a question that director Levy has now answered.
While Ryan Reynolds has been taking a sabbatical from acting, the in-demand star has a number of projects waiting for him on his return, and Free Guy director Levy has his own laden slate of projects to deal with, including his work on the new series of Stranger Things, and as director on Starman and producer on The Boogeyman. Having worked together on the new release of The Adam Project, the pair recently spoke to Collider, and the subject of Free Guy 2 came up, and those expecting a quick sequel are going to be disappointed. Levy said, “We loved Free Guy. We were thrilled that Free Guy was as successful as it was, and particularly as an original movie at a time where few get made and even fewer are hits. So that was gratifying. And if we can crack that sequel, that's something that might be very fun to make together.”
Free Guy 2 is Certainly on the Cards, but Shawn Levy Has No Intention of Rushing It
When asked whether there had already been any discussions about that sequel moving ahead, Levy said that there is certainly a lot of interest from Disney to do a sequel, but it will not happen unless he knows they can get it right. Elaborating on that, Levy said:
“I've definitely gotten that phone call. I don't know how to quantify the how much, but that exact phone call that you just basically paraphrased, that's a call. I've gotten a few of those in the past several months. So there is definitely real interest there. But to Ryan's point, we knew. We had such a clear idea of the tone, the story, the details of Free Guy, and we both made a few sequels in our lives, and so we know how hard it is to make a worthy one. And when we feel confident that's the kind we'll make, then we'll make it.”
As one of the most successful movies of the last two years, Free Guy has been available on Disney+ internationally for some time now, but has only arrived on the U.S. version of the platform. With this allowing more people to discover the imaginative world of Free Guy, there is no doubt that those calls for a sequel are not going to be dying down anytime soon.
