Ryan Reynolds' time on stage at CCXP this weekend proved to be very eventful, and even included a near death experience for the popular actor. When he finally did take the stage, Reynolds revealed the Free Guy trailer, and made a surprising declaration that is sure to excite and irritate fans in equal measure.

"Free Guy is my favorite movie I've ever made, and that means a lot to me because I made Deadpool."

Diehard fans of the merc with a mouth, Deadpool, are potentially going to be a little irked by this, as the comic book franchise that Reynolds himself had such a huge hand in finally bringing to the big screen apparently falls from the top spot on his 'personal favourites' list. Reynolds has famously been a pivotal figure in making Deadpool what it is, and was even rumoured to have been the person to leak the test footage that led to the first movie being made. The upcoming Free Guy must be a very special movie to push itself to number one.

Addressing the crowd at CCXP, Reynolds shed some light on what audiences can expect from the movie that has stolen his heart, comparing it to another beloved franchise.

"We really wanted to bring to the world a modern day Back to the Future for modern generations."

This comparison is certainly an intriguing one, and suggests that Free Guy will be the kind of light-hearted adventure epic that the new trailer seemed to depict...though it does look like it will be much more violent than the treasured 80's trilogy.

Ryan Reynolds then went onto explain his inspirations for his character, Guy, and once you know what they are you can see he is wearing them on his sleeves. He took his cues from both Will Ferrell's Buddy the Elf from modern festive favourite Elf, and Peter Seller's legendary performance from comedy-drama Being There. clearly , Reynolds has put a whole lot of thought into this one, and the fact that he is also credited as a producer on the movie, it starts to make more sense as to why he is so excited about Free Guy.

Free Guy drops us into the open world video game Free City, an amalgamation of Grand Theft Auto and Fortnite, Guy, played by Reynolds, is a non-player character (NPC), working as a bank teller. Thanks to a code developed by programmers Milly and Keys inserted into Free City by the publisher Antoine, Guy suddenly becomes aware of his world being a video game, and takes steps to make himself the hero, creating a race against time to save the game before the developers can shut it down. Starring alongside Reynolds are Jodie Comer, Joe Keery and Taika Waititi.

The movie looks to contain a lot of the kind of self-aware humour that fans of Reynolds have become accustomed to, with the film having a similar air to The Lego Movie more so than Back to the Future. We can all judge whether it becomes our new favourite too when the film is scheduled to be released on July 3, 2020. CCXP
