Below please find the official trailer debut for STX Entertainment's Free State of Jones. It is an epic action-drama written and directed by four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross. The true-life drama stars Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey. 

Free State of Jones is set during the Civil War. It tell the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War.

Newt Knight's marriage to a former slave, Rachel, and his subsequent establishment of a mixed race community was unique in the post-war South. The supporting cast includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Keri Russell and Mahershala Ali.

This first trailer shows Newt leading a makeshift army as they advance on unseen army. We also see the emotional weight as Newt must level a large rifle against his enemies. Production took place in New Orleans in the spring of 2015. The movie will be in theaters this May.
