Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hit all the right notes with MCU fans, but despite the success of the movie that hasn’t stopped it attracting criticism from some unexpected quarters – namely French ones. As per Politico, the French authorities are less than pleased with the way the country’s Armed Forces are portrayed in the 2022 hit.

During the events that take place in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, once scene sees the Dora Milaje presenting a group of French soldiers to the United Nations, and the seemingly harmless appearance has causes a lot of grievance from France’s Minister of the Armed Forces Sebastien Lecornu, who aired his annoyance at the movie on Twitter. The translation of his tweet reads:

“I strongly condemn this false and deceptive representation of our armed forces. I am thinking of and honouring the 58 French soldiers who died defending Mali, at it request, in the face of Islamist terrorist groups.”

It is noted by journalist Jean Bexon, whose Tweet was shared by Lecornu, that the uniform worn by the prisoners in the movie are almost the same as those worn by French forces in the operation that Lecornu references.

Obviously the events of the MCU are all entirely fictional, but it seems that the story of other countries including the French invading Wakanda in an attempt to steal their stores of Vibranium has been taken in a completely unexpected context by the French authorities. With the story heavily centered on power struggles and global communities, there is nothing personal about the use of French soldiers in the scenes and the wider picture does include other nationalities within its narrative.
