In the 90s, Friends became one of the most beloved modern sitcoms in television history. With ten acclaimed seasons, it's most likely that almost everyone has seen at least one episode of the series or knows the iconic 90s sitcom through other pop culture media. Friends was, for a decade, a safe haven for fans across the world. Whether it was the hilarious situations they found themselves in or the milestones they experienced together, audiences felt very much part of the TV sitcom cast.

Update October 30, 2023: Following the tragic passing of actor Matthew Perry, who played the role of Chandler Bing on Friends, this article has been updated to reflect his passing as well as where the rest of the cast of Friends is.

After 2021's Friends: The Reunion aired on HBO Max, many were nostalgic for the classic series and wondering what the actors had been up to since the series concluded in 2004. For years, fans clamored for some continuation of the series, be it a continuation like The Conners was for Roseanne or a reboot similar to ones like McGuyver, Hawaii Five-0, or Magnum P.I. The cast always downplayed any continuation outside of the reunion, and now, following the tragic death of Matthew Perry, any hopes to see the six friends together again have been dashed. Here is what the cast of Freinds has been up to since the series ended and who, sadly, is no longer with us.

Paul Rudd has come a long way since starring in Friends as Phoebe's boyfriend-turned-husband Mike Hannigan, appearing in many projects and making a name for himself as Hollywood's most beloved goofball. Outside of the show, Rudd is best known for starring as Scott Lang/Ant-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in three solo films, as well as team-up ones such as 2019's Avengers: Endgame. The character of Scott Lang, a petty criminal-turned-hero wanting to do best by his daughter, suits Rudd's acting style perfectly, and his portrayal has been well-received by fans. Maggie Wheeler

Janice in Friends TV show
NBC

You can instantly hear the laugh and the iconic "Oh My God" at the mention of Janice's name. Originally meant to only be a side character — one of Chandler's many girlfriends — Maggie Wheeler made Janice one of the most iconic supporting characters of the entire series. She became so well-liked by Friends fans that she stayed until the very end, making appearances here and there throughout each season. Although Wheeler isn't as well known as other members of the cast, that doesn't mean she hasn't had a highly successful career.

On film, the actress has appeared in Doctor Doolittle 3 (2006), voiced the character of Trudy Pickering in the 2019 animated version of The Addams Family, and starred in the comedy film Mark, Mary & Some Other People (2021) as Lisa. Furthermore, she has lent her iconic voice to the character of Trinette McGoon in several episodes of FX adult animation Archer, and has made guest appearances on a number of other TV shows, including How I Met Your Mother, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Shameless.

Matt LeBlanc

One of the biggest heartthrobs of the 90s was Matt LeBlanc, thanks to his character Joey Tribbiani, who had a tendency to break women's hearts, but at the same time is a devoted sweetheart to his friends. Since the show ended, LeBlanc has gone on to have a varied career on the small screen. Immediately after Friends, the actor starred as Joey in his own spin-off series, Joey, which was canceled partway through its second season due to low ratings.

LeBlanc had greater success playing a fictionalized version of himself in Showtime's critically acclaimed sitcom Episodes, which reunited him with Friends co-creator David Crane, and earned him a Golden Globe and four Emmy Award nominations. Between 2016 and 2019, LeBlanc turned his hand to presenting when he fronted the BBC's award-winning motoring series, Top Gear. Serving as an executive producer, he also starred as the main character in CBS TV series Man With A Plan, which focused on a father trying to raise three of his kids with his wife. Unfortunately, the show was canceled in 2020 after four seasons.

For many, Phoebe's quirkiness has become a safe space for them. Truthfully, everyone should live their lives the way Phoebe runs. Lisa Kudrow's amazing portrayal of the character earned her many acting roles in both TV and film after the show ended in 2004.

On TV, Kudrow went on to star as the lead in two seasons of HBO comedy-drama The Comeback, a show which is co-created and which earned her two Primetime Emmy Award nominations. Similarly, between 2008 and 2014 she wrote and starred in the equally acclaimed web series Web Therapy, where she played the role of therapist Fiona Wallice. Furthermore, Kudrow has lent her voice to a number of projects, including adult animations HouseBroken, where she features as a dog named Honey, and BoJack Horseman, where she plays an Owl.

Meanwhile, on film, Kudrow has had roles in titles such as P.S. I Love You, Easy A, Neighbors, The Girl on the Train, Boss Baby, and BookSmart. Her most recent role was as Aunt Heidi in Disney+ musical Better Nate Than Ever, about a 13-year-old boy who wants to become a Broadway star. She is also set to play a character named Penelope in the upcoming Time Bandits TV series.

Matthew Perry

Chandler Bing is arguably the most relatable character on Friends, what with his self-deprecating and wry sense of humor, which actor Matthew Perry played to perfection. Since his time as Chandler, Perry has starred in some old-time comedy classics, such as 17 Again (2009), where he played the role of Mike, who becomes his 17-year-old self (played by Zac Efron) once again. Starring alongside Bruce Willis, Perry also played a dentist involved in mob crime in the crime comedy The Whole Nine Yards (2000).

Perry's small screen credits include as one of the main characters in the short-lived comedy-drama Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Revolving around the production of a Saturday Night Live-esque live comedy show, it was created by Aaron Sorkin and co-starred Bradley Whitford and Sarah Paulson. A writer and an actor, Perry also co-created and starred in the ABC sitcom Mr. Sunshine, as well as the reboot of the classic sitcom The Odd Couple. Moreover, Perry had many guest or recurring roles on several popular series, including The West Wing, Scrubs and The Good Wife.

The actor's struggles with drugs and alcohol have been widely reported, and in 2016, his play The End of Longing, which deals with this subject, debuted in London's West End. Meanwhile, Perry's memoir titled Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing was published in 2022. Sadly, Perry passed away on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54.

Courteney Cox beautifully breathed life into the eccentric, well-organized character of Monica Geller, but that's not the only series she is widely known for. She is also famous for playing the character of Gale Weathers in the Scream franchise ever since the first movie was released in 1996, while Friends was still an ongoing show. Jennifer Aniston, who portrayed Rachel Green on Friends, is undoubtedly the biggest star that came out of the series. As one of the highest-paid actresses in the world, she has starred in some major successful projects in the industry. Primarily known for her work in comedies, some of Aniston's most popular films include Bruce Almighty (2003), The Break-Up (2006), Marley & Me (2008), Horrible Bosses (2011), and We're the Millers (2013)

Not afraid to show off her versatility as an actress once in a while, Aniston has, from time to time, taken on more dramatic roles, such as in 2014's Cake, which earned her both a Critics Choice and Screen Actors Guild nomination for Best Actress.

Since 2019, Aniston has played the role of Alex Levy in The Morning Show on Apply TV+with alongside co-star Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell. Three seasons of the show have aired so far, with a fourth one on the way.
