The rain is starting to pour at Netflix, as the streaming giant has confirmed Friends will be leaving the service at the end of the year. In a tweet posted to the official Twitter account for Netflix, the company announced it was time to say goodbye to the beloved comedy series. "We're sorry to see Friends go to Warner's streaming service at the beginning of 2020 (in The US)," the tweet says. Along with a coffee cup emoji, the tweet adds: "Thanks for the memories, gang." And with that, it now looks to be official Friends will no longer be available for binge-watching on the service by 2020.

There's arguably no other TV show which perfectly encompasses how the '90s were like than Friends. First premiering on NBC in 1994, the series ultimately ran for ten seasons and 236 episodes. It follows a group of six pals living in Manhattan, exploring both their friendships and romantic relationships. The ensemble cast consisted of Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green, Courteney Cox as Monica Geller, Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe Buffay, David Schwimmer as Ross Geller, Matt LeBlanc as Joey Tribbiani, and Matthew Perry as Chandler Bing. Over the years, several prominent names from Hollywood guest-starred on the series as well, including Tom Selleck, George Clooney, Julia Roberts, and Alec Baldwin.

During its run, Friends established itself as one of the most successful and memorable comedy shows of all time. All ten seasons ranked within the top ten of the final TV season ratings, reaching the number-one spot during season 8. When the series finale aired, over 52 million Americans tuned in, officially marking the end of Friends as the fifth most-watched series finale in TV history. The show was always a darling during awards season as well, pulling in an astonishing 62 Primetime Emmy Award nominations during its run and winning in 2002 for Outstanding Comedy Series.

The issue of Friends leaving Netflix first hit headlines last year when it was reported the show was going to be removed on Jan. 1, 2019. In response, fans started a petition to keep the series on the service and took to social media to voice their displeasure in droves. Due to the outcry, Netflix reportedly spent about $100 million to keep Friends put. Ultimately, Netflix subscribers are only getting another year to spend with the series, as WarnerMedia looks to compete with their own upcoming service. Considering the recent reports of The Office preparing to depart from Netflix as well, this is certainly a major blow for the company, as it's losing two of its most binge-worthy comedy shows.

The good news is that it's not like Friends is going away. It's just going to be at a different home. However, it's certainly unfortunate for Netflix subscribers uninterested in adding another streaming service to their monthly bills. For what it's worth, we'll apparently have until the end of the year to binge as much Friends as we can on the red-and-white streaming giant.
