Full House was a comedy series created by Jeff Franklin. Running from 1987 to 1995, it starred Bob Saget as Danny Tanner, a widowed man who raises his three daughters with the help of his comedian friend Joey (Dave Coulier) and musician brother-in-law Jesse (John Stamos). Jesse would eventually marry Becky (Lori Loughlin), and have twins, adding even more people to their San Francisco home. The show continued on with a reboot, but the original series remains a beloved family sitcom for its heartwarming storylines and funny, lovable characters. Here’s our ranking of the major characters in the show.

8 Michelle

Despite Michelle (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen) being a baby when the show started, much of it centered around her. As the youngest sister, she often toed the line between adorable and annoying, and caused much of the drama – intentionally or not – like meddling in Danny’s love life or running away at Disney World. In later seasons, it also seemed like Michelle had a bit of a rude streak. Still, watching her grow from a baby to a confident young girl was a highlight of the show, and she gave us the beloved catchphrase, “You got it, dude!”

7 Kimmy

Ranked one of Gold Derby’s best TV neighbors, Kimmy Gibbler (Andrea Barber) was one of a few characters to not live in the Tanner house or be a family member. As DJ’s best friend, she often weighed in on the Tanners’ exploits as an outsider, watching their chaos with amusement. She was annoying, but had great one-liners and funny moments, and was needed to break up the constant Tanner drama. She had her rough moments, like getting drunk at a party and fighting about it with DJ, but she remained a true friend to DJ, and was practically another – albeit unwelcome – Tanner.

6 Becky

Becky was a news reporter who began working with Danny in season two, eventually falling in love with Jesse. At times, she felt like the only normal member of the family, and was often the straight man to all their chaos, providing contrast to the other characters. She was a much-needed mother figure to the girls, with great heartwarming moments with them, and became a mom to her own twins in season five. She was driven but still patient and loving, and made a great addition to the family.

5 Joey

As a comedian, Joey brought the most humor, even if a lot of it was corny. He was often the most positive member of the family, and broke up a lot of the tension. His constant humor also made his more serious moments stand out, like when he gets upset at DJ for not telling him she was staying late at karate practice. Though he never had his own kids, he really cared for the girls, even going to a mother-daughter sleepover with Stephanie. He may not have been a blood relation, but he was a true part of the family.

4 Danny

Danny is best known for his love of cleaning and his dad jokes, but he was so much more, caring for the girls and keeping them together after their mother’s death from the very first episode. He even did his best to be there for each kid equally, and not favor any of them. Despite his sometimes strict nature, he also had several emotional moments on the show, parenting the girls with genuine kindness and giving them the fatherly wisdom they needed. He was one of The Hollywood Reporter’s best TV dads, and his love for his family earns him the distinction.

3 DJ

As the oldest sister, DJ (Candace Cameron Bure) struggled with having her own space and her own life with two little sisters constantly around. She remained likable and relatable throughout, especially as she worked through her teen struggles, like body image and first jobs. She made a lot of mistakes, like falling asleep at her boyfriend’s or sneaking her sisters into the movies, but she always learned from them, and emerged as an intelligent and caring person.

2 Stephanie

Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) had great growth throughout the show. She started off as a typical middle child, feeling inferior to both her older sister and younger sister. However, she would grow to be close with DJ, and a strong older sister for Michelle, while still finding that middle ground of being happy as herself. She had great funny moments and emotional ones as well, like when she helped a classmate who was being abused and showed her more caring side as she learned about the world.

1 Jesse

Jesse has probably the most character growth out of anyone on the show, and still manages to be a fun character through each phase. He started out as a rebellious, motorcycle-driving musician who constantly dated women and cared about his hair more than anything else. He learned a little more maturity and parenting skills by being there for the girls with humor, love, and support. By the end, he became a loving husband to Becky, and a dedicated father to Nicky and Alex – and he still maintained his sense of humor and his great hair.
