Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller has once again revealed just how epic the scope of the upcoming prequel, Furiosa, will be. Speaking with Deadline, Miller offered some insight into the direction of the project, which he describes as "a saga," while revealing that the story of Furiosa will span 15 years.

“I’ll tell you how it’s going when it’s finished, but it has got off to a lovely start. All I can say about my excitement about doing it is that it’s definitely exciting, because even though it’s certainly of that world of Fury Road, it’s also got a lot of the differences we’ve been talking about. Again, it’s uniquely familiar. And probably the biggest difference is the timespan. Fury Road happened over three days and two nights and this one happens over 15 years. So, it’s a saga.”

Miller hopes to do something different with Furiosa, all while keeping it within the same world as Fury Road. The biggest difference between the two installments in the Mad Max franchise is by far the scope. While Mad Max: Fury Road took place over just a few days, Miller plans to explore both the title character and the world around her more so than ever before, with the events of Furiosa spanning more than a decade.

Miller has teased the epic nature of Furiosa before. "I didn't set out to make a big, epic movie,” the filmmaker said last year. “It's a story I wanted to tell. But as it turns out, it's just got a lot of different scenes. The one thing I can say about it is, Fury Road happened over three days and two nights, but this is a saga. It happens over many years. So there's a lot of different elements to it."

Furiosa Will Introduce Early Versions of Several Mad Max Icons

Alongside the young version of Furiosa, played by The Northman’s Anya Taylor-Joy who takes over from Fury Road's Charlize Theron, the prequel will also introduce early versions of several Mad Max characters and locations. “Furiosa is more of a traditional three-act drama. If people are expecting to see another chase movie, it's not going to be that,” unit production manager Dean Hood revealed. “When I started reading [the 'Furiosa' script], I couldn't put it down. It is going to be really, really good. You get to see Gas Town. You get to see The Bullet Farm. It's exciting to be able to build that stuff."

Taking place over 15 years should give George Miller plenty of time to fill Furiosa with familiar faces and places. Something which should be an absolute treat to behold for fans of the long-running franchise.

Directed by George Miller, who has written the script alongside Nick Lathouris, Mad Max: Furiosa stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the title character alongside Tom Burke, with Thor: Love and Thunder star Chris Hemsworth due to play the movie’s main antagonist, a role which will reportedly see the Marvel star play “against type.”

Filming is now underway in Australia, with Furiosa scheduled for release on May 24, 2024.
