The upcoming Mad Max prequel, Furiosa, will not be a chase movie like its Academy Award-winning predecessor Mad Max: Fury Road. Instead, Furiosa will approach the early years of the character with a more “traditional three-act" structure, according to Fury Road producer and first assistant director P. J. Voeten, who has discussed the project for the behind-the-scenes book "Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road," by Kyle Buchanan.

“Furiosa is more of a traditional three-act drama. If people are expecting to see another chase movie, it's not going to be that.”

As well as revealing details of how Mad Max: Furiosa will tell the story of the fan-favorite character’s past, Buchanan’s book divulges further information about the prequel courtesy of unit production manager Dean Hood, who teases the movie’s exploration of the post-apocalyptic landscape.

“When I started reading [the 'Furiosa' script], I couldn't put it down. It is going to be really, really good. You get to see Gas Town. You get to see The Bullet Farm. It's exciting to be able to build that stuff."

Furiosa will introduce a younger version of the character long before she ever united with Max Rockatansky. While we were shown glimpses of the bizarre world beyond Immortan Joe's Citadel, it sounds like Furiosa will show us much, much more, including places like Gas Town and The Bullet Farm. Both of which were mentioned in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road.

Thus, the scope of Furiosa will be much wider than that of the superbly streamlined Fury Road, which took place almost entirely on the titular highway. Director George Miller has previously teased his intentions for Furiosa saying, "I didn't set out to make a big, epic movie,” Miller said in April last year. “It's a story I wanted to tell. But as it turns out, it's just got a lot of different scenes. The one thing I can say about it is, Fury Road happened over three days and two nights, but this is a saga. It happens over many years. So there's a lot of different elements to it."

With production on Mad Max: Furiosa gearing up to finally begin, director George Miller’s epic vision for the movie has become clear. It has since been revealed that the post-apocalyptic prequel will be the biggest movie shoot in Australia's history, with the movie set to receive massive financial incentives from federal and state governments when it begins filming in 2022, with pre-production soon to get underway.

"This is great news for New South Wales," said state premier Gladys Berejiklian in a statement "It is expected to become the biggest film ever to be made in Australia." Berejiklian continued, highlighting the opportunities that will result from the investment, "This is great news for NSW - Furiosa is expected to support more than 850 local jobs and bring in around A$350 million ($285 million) into the NSW economy."

Directed by George Miller, who has written the script alongside Nick Lathouris, Mad Max: Furiosa stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the title character, Tom Burke, and Thor: Love and Thunder star Chris Hemsworth, who has now been revealed to be playing the movie’s lead villain. Production on Mad Max: Furiosa is expected to start soon, with a release date scheduled for May 24, 2024.
