Filming on the upcoming Mad Max prequel, Furiosa, is now underway, and the first set images have now emerged. Released courtesy of Twitter user Cinema Solace, the images from production on the project, which finds director George Miller return to helm the prequel with The Northman star Anya Taylor-Joy playing the title character, offers our first glimpse at the return to Miller’s unique post-apocalyptic world.

While the images give nothing away regarding the plot, they do provide a good look at several Mad Max-esque vehicles, including a modified car and a gang of dirt bike riders. Another image shows a large industrial gate, with all the images reminiscent of the Mad Max style that has made the franchise so iconic. We can expect to see more from filming on Furiosa, as the major production continues in Australia.

Directed by George Miller, who has written the script alongside Nick Lathouris, specific plot details for Mad Max: Furiosa remain under wraps. However, George Miller himself has teased the epic scale of the prequel, revealing that the events will take place over many years. "I didn't set out to make a big, epic movie,” the filmmaker said of the project. “It's a story I wanted to tell. But as it turns out, it's just got a lot of different scenes. The one thing I can say about it is, Fury Road happened over three days and two nights, but this is a saga. It happens over many years. So there's a lot of different elements to it."

Anya Taylor-Joy will lead the movie in the role of Furiosa, taking over from Mad Max: Fury Road's Charlize Theron. Alongside introducing us to the early years of the beloved Fury Road character, the prequel is expected to be full of Easter eggs for Mad Max aficionados and will also introduce early versions of several Mad Max characters and locations, including Gas Town and The Bullet Farm.

With Anya Taylor-Joy all set to lead the story, Furiosa will also introduce Thor: Love and Thunder star Chris Hemsworth as the movie’s antagonist. Revealed in the behind-the-scenes book "Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road," by Kyle Buchanan, first assistant director, P. J. Voeten revealed that Furiosa will find the Hollywood heartthrob playing “against type” as the villain.

"George saw Chris [Hemsworth] initially as a courtesy and then fell in love with the idea,” he revealed. “He's going to play totally against type, the lead baddie. Unfortunately, we've got to find all of our other characters that aren't around anymore: a new Immortan, a new Bullet Farmer, and a few others."

Prior rumors have described Hemsworth’s role as a "breathtakingly handsome” man who possesses "an angel's face, scarred by a deep forehead wounded stitched together with shiny chrome staples.” The same report claims that the character will be named Dr. Dementus, the perfect moniker for someone in the Mad Max universe.

Directed and co-written by George Miller and starring Tom Burke, Nathan Jones, and Angus Sampson alongside Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, Furiosa is scheduled for release on May 24, 2024.
