Futurama fans are desperate for more adventures in that world and, if expectations can be tempered just a bit, that is on the way. The show has been off the air for about four years now and there hasn't been any new TV episodes or movies since Comedy Central said farewell to Fry and the gang. But now series co-creator David X. Cohen has revealed that a new Futurama project is in the works and news about it will be revealed later this summer.

David X. Cohen, who co-created Futurama along with Simpsons creator Matt Groening, recently did a Reddit AMA. While answering fan questions, he made it clear that there are no plans for a Futurama revival series or a new movie, but that fans can get excited about some new Futurama something or other. Here's what he had to say about it.

"There are no new TV episodes or movies in the pipeline at the moment...However, here and now I promise a different avenue of exciting Futurama news later this summer, no kidding. Keep your expectations modest and you will be pleased, possibly. I am not allowed to say more or I will be lightly phasered."

That is good news for Futurama fans, but now the questions becomes, what is this mysterious project? If it isn't TV or a movie, it will probably be something in the digital space. There has already been a mobile game in the form of Futurama: Worlds for Tomorrow, so it probably isn't another one of those. Could it be a Futurama VR experience? Maybe a Futurama comic book? One option outside of the somewhat obvious is some Futurama live shows. The cast recently did a live reading of an episode and it is possible that they are thinking about taking the show on the road. That is just a guess, but that might be one of the more exciting potential options.

Futurama originally aired on Fox from 1999 to 2003, but couldn't quite cut it in the ratings for the network to justify keeping it around. Comedy Central eventually saved the day and revived the series in 2006 and kept it on the air until 2013, with the series running for a grand total of 140 episodes in total. Despite the very satisfying Futurama finale, fans have been hoping for some more episodes ever since.

Whatever this mystery project is, at least David X. Cohen is doing his best to manage expectations. Matt Groening is currently working on a mystery Netflix series, but based on these comments, we can't possibly assume it is at all related to Futurama. The good news is that the cast has always been game to do more Futurama, no matter what the project, so the key players will probably be involved. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for some more news related to this mysterious new Futurama project.
