As previously hinted at by producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, G.I. Joe 3 will focus primarily on Dwayne Johnson's character Roadblock in a script to be written by Jonathan Lemkin.

G.I. Joe 3 is set to hit theaters sometime in 2016, but its unclear if it will be a spring, summer or fall release. G.I. Joe Retaliation star Adrianne Palicki is expected to return as Lady Jaye, with other previous cast members also returning, though no other actors was mentioned by name. Its not believed that Channing Tatum will be making a return, though that has been discussed in the past. His Duke character was left for dead in the previous sequel, but his demise has never been confirmed.

Jonathan Lemkin is currently writing The Longest Night for Paramount, with G.I. Joe 3 marking his second feature deal with the studio. That movie is based on a GQ magazine article and will be directed by Frank Marshall.

Jon M. Chu was originally set to direct G.I. Joe 3, but both Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Dwayne Johnson have stated in previous interviews that they are looking for a new director. Jon M. Chu moved onto the other Hasbro property Jem and the Holograms when G.I. Joe 3 was delayed last year.

Besides having a story that revolves round Roadblock, story details are vague. G.I. Joe 3 will begin shooting in the second quarter of 2015 so that it can make its 2016 release date. The franchise is considered a major property after the previous installment brought in $370 million worldwide.

Jonathan Lemkin has worked with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura many times in the past, having adapted the screenplay for Shooter starring Mark Wahlberg, as well as The Devil's Advocate and Lethal Weapon 4 when the producer was stationed at Warner Bros.
