Lifetime's upcoming movie inspired by Gabby Petito's murder is currently shooting in Utah, and video footage recorded from the set shows the filming of a heated scene between Petito and her killer, Brian Laundrie. Previously, it was announced that Lifetime was developing a movie called The Gabby Petito Story with Thora Birch attached to direct. Per TMZ, new footage has emerged from an outdoor set near Salt Lake City that reveals a first look at the film and its Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie actors.

The scene depicts the couple having an argument before Laundrie storms off in the familiar white van that he'd later drive home alone in after murdering Petito. It's eerie subject matter, given how it's based on true events, though that may be part of the point, as the film is being developed as a part of Lifetime's Stop Violence Against Women initiative. But not everyone thinks that filming this movie is a good idea. On social media, there has been some outcry from those who feel it's inappropriate to make a movie about Petito, especially so soon after her death.

"Hollywood is making a movie about the death of Gabby Petito?!?! Unreal," one tweet reads. "Tone deaf. But I’m not surprised. Hollywood can’t come up with anything original these days."

The Sun's Kate Forrester added, "The fact the Gabby Petito murder is already being made into a movie actually makes me physically sick. Is our thirst for true crime that insane? Ugh. I hate my own generation sometimes."

Dog the Bounty Hunter Joins Search for Brian Laundrie

In the summer of 2021, Petito and Laundrie had been documenting their journey across the United States in her van, but Petito's family knew something was wrong when Laundrie returned to his home alone and cut off all contact without any explanation as to where she was. Her body was later discovered in Wyoming and it was determined that she had been strangled, but by this time, Laundrie had gone missing.

A national manhunt was launched with the case getting national attention, and even celebrity fugitive hunters like John Walsh and Dog the Bounty Hunter had gotten involved. But Laundrie was not in hiding. His body was discovered in a remote area in October 2021 and it was determined that he had died by suicide. A notebook recovered at the scene, the pages of which were recently made public, contains a confession penned by Laundrie in which he claims that Petito's death was a mercy killing after she'd gotten badly injured from a fall.

The Gabby Petito Story is directed by Thora Birch and written by Gregory Small and Richard Blaney. Birch also stars in the film as Nichole Schmidt, Petito's mother, with the story focusing on "what may have gone wrong during their cross-country trip that resulted in Gabby's tragic murder." No release date has yet been announced.
