Frank Miller is best known for his graphic novels, but he is diving head first into his role as the writer-director on Will Eisner's The Spirit. According to Variety, Miller has just hired Gabriel Macht to play the lead character.

The film follows a man who has faked his own death so that he can fight crime in Central City. His main adversary is the Octopus, an ugly apparition that can kill people with his face.

Lionsgate's Mike Paseornek stated, "We think Gabriel has a devilishly charming quality, and the dry wit that embodies the Spirit, and we wanted to do this with someone who can embody this character for the next few years, because we anticipate we'll be making more than one Spirit movie."

The Spirit goes into production this October. It will be released in early 2009.
