In theaters October 7th, 2016, the new X-Men franchise spin-off Gambit finally has a director! Rupert Wyatt will officially direct Channing Tatum in this solo adventure about the Cajun Mutant first introduced on the big screen in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The character was originally played by Taylor Kitsch, who has moved onto True Detective Season 2, which debuts this summer.

Gambit marks the first solo effort for the character, and will hopefully set up a superhero franchise for star Channing Tatum. While the character eventually becomes a member of the X-Men, he is not expected to appear in X-Men: Apocalypse, which will debut a few months before Gambit hits the big screen. Also known as Remy LeBeau, Gambit has the ability to charge objects with energy making them explosive. His most iconic weapon of choice is a playing card, which he likes to throw around with abandon.

Channing Tatum is producing Gambit alongside Reid Carolin, Lauren Schuler Donner, and Simon Kinberg, reports Entertainment Weekly. Rupert Wyatt is best known for kicking off the new Planet of the Apes franchise with Rise of the Planet of the Apes. His last film was The Gambler with Mark Wahlberg. What do you think? Is Rupert Wyatt the perfect choice for Gambit?
