Even though Game of Thrones season 8 is going to be the show's last, it's going to deliver the goods, as fans are basically in for six epic movies to cap off the series. This, according to HBO CEO Richard Plepler, who has seen the final six episodes of the wildly popular fantasy series and has nothing but praise for what has been accomplished. Here's what Plepler had to say about it in a recent interview.

"It's a spectacle. The guys have done six movies. The reaction I had while watching them was, 'I'm watching a movie.' They knew the bar was high. They've exceeded the bar. I've watched them twice without any CGI and I'm in awe. Everybody's in for an extraordinary treat of storytelling and of magical, magical production."

Granted, it's not as though the CEO of the network is going to have anything but positive comments about HBO's biggest show ever heading into the final season. Still, it does sound like fans are going to get a lot out of these final six episodes. Initially, hearing that Game of Thrones season 8 was only going to consist of six episodes was a bummer for fans, but with those episodes all becoming a movie of sorts, that may well have worked out better than a higher episode count.

No matter what, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had their work cut out for them. Pop culture rarely sees shows that are not only this popular, but are also this feverishly consumed by the fanbase. Bringing that all to an end is going to require a very fine balancing act. Is it really going to be possible to satisfy everyone? It's a tall order, no doubt.

For the time being, much of what we're going to see unfold this season remains a mystery. HBO recently unveiled some choice footage in a promo previewing their 2019 slate, but it didn't give us a whole lot. Several cast members have also indicated that season 8 is going to be a brutal affair, with star Gwendoline Christie suggesting that certain fans may need therapy by the time everything wraps up. It's going to be a big, exciting, emotional ride and a massive moment within the pop culture landscape.

Luckily, this won't be the last we've seen of Westeros on the small screen, as HBO has already given a pilot order to a new spin-off series set thousands of years before the events of the main series. Naomi Watts and Josh Whitehouse have been cast to lead that show, which George R.R. Martin has been calling The Long Night, even though HBO doesn't seem to like that title very much. Game of Thrones season 8 will debut in April. Hopefully, we should be getting a full-length trailer with some actual footage sooner rather than later. This news was first reported by Variety.
