A writer, producer and story editor on the hugely successful HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones, Bryan Cogman is being tasked to write the first Magic: The Gathering movie, setting up a franchise for 20th Century Fox.

Magic: The Gathering is being produced by Hasbro and Fox-based X-Men franchise producer Simon Kinberg.

20th Century Fox has had the franchise movie rights to Magic: The Gathering since last January. The game originated in 1993, created by Wizards of the Coast. It spawned the collectible trading card game movement, with its creatures, wizards and magic spells. Players use them all to defeat each other. Hasbro bought the company in 1999.

No director has been set for Magic: The Gathering and its unclear when production will begin.
