Production is currently under way on Season 5 of HBO's hit series Game of Thrones, and series creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff revealed that this season will feature a series first: flashbacks.

During a Q&A with film students at an event in Spain, it was revealed that they are breaking one of their cardinal rules set forth when they first started making Game of Thrones, by allowing a flashback sequence. Here is the translated quote from Los Siete Reinos, which isn't attributed to a specific producer.

"Making the first season, we set a rule: No prophecies, dreams, or flashbacks. We already failed the first two, and this season we broke the third. So yes, this season will finally have flashbacks."

(There will be a major SPOILER if you continue reading!!)

Entertainment Weekly reports there will only be one flashback, that will serve as the opening scene of the Season 5 premiere, although that may change in post-production. No details of the flashback were given, however, you may recall that actor Charles Dance hinted last month that his character Tywin Lannister will return in Season 5, despite being killed by his son Tyrion (Peter Dinklage).
