Last week, we reported that Warner Bros. gave the green light to Akira, with Garrett Hedlund in early talks to portray Kaneda. Today we have word that Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter have been offered roles in Akira, although it isn't known if they will accept these offers yet.

Gary Oldman has been offered the role of Colonel, while Helena Bonham Carter is circling Lady Miyako. The story, based on Katsuhiro Ôtomo's manga, revolves around Kaneda, the leader of a biker gang who tries to rescue his best friend Tetsuo from military experiments.

Jaume Collet-Serra is directing Akira from a screenplay by Albert Torres and Steve Kloves. Leonardo DiCaprio is producing through his Appian Way company alongside Andrew Lazar and Jennifer Davisson Killoran.

It isn't known when production will start on Akira.
