Vanessa Redgrave stars in this adaptation of the best-selling Rosamunde Pilcher novel of the same name. The story is about a woman at the end of her life who is dealing with some ungrateful children and some memories that warm her heart.

Penelope Keeling (Redgrave) has just suffered a heart attack and takes this as a sign to wrap up some loose ends in her life. She is the daughter of a famous painter and still has some of his paintings and sketches around her house, some of which have been hidden for decades. Two of her children press her to sell the artwork and give them the money, but her third child, Olivia (Victoria Smurfit) is a bit more sympathetic and not at all a greedy person like her siblings.

When Olivia's boyfriend dies suddenly, she brings his teenage daughter Antonia (Stephanie Stumph) back with her to stay with her mother. Penelope enjoys the company and she and the girl get along very well. Then when a young horticulturist Danus (Lukas Gregorowicz), stops by to admire the garden, he and Antonia are attracted to each other. He stays on to help with the gardening, and spend time with the beautiful young woman.

Antonia is more of a daughter to Penelope than her own daughter Nancy, and definitely more loving and caring than her son. With Penelope's insight and wisdom, Antonia gets over her grief and begins to see the light again.

Penelope's life is told in flashbacks as she describes her marriage to a man she didn't love, and then as she remembers the one man whom she still loves. Richard (Alistair MacKenzie) met Penelope when she was in Cornwall with her young daughter during the war. She knew she was not in love with her husband who was far off somewhere fighting for the country. She and Richard fell madly in love, and he vowed to return from the war to marry her. Richard was her true love, and she sees the same feelings between Antonia and Danus, and hopes they are more successful with their love than she was.
