Though he is only three movies in, director Jordan Peele has already proven himself to be one of the most exciting modern moviemakers. While we await the release of his latest offering, the sci-fi horror Nope, Peele has revealed that he could one day return to the movie that started it all; 2017’s Oscar-winning Get Out. Speaking with AP News, Peele hinted that, while nothing is in the pipeline yet, Get Out 2 could someday arrive on our screens.
"I do get asked that a lot. Never say never. There’s certainly a lot to talk about left. We’ll see."
Written, co-produced, and directed by Jordan Peele in his directorial debut, Get Out follows Daniel Kaluuya as Chris, a young black man, who is preparing himself to meet the family of his white girlfriend, Rose Armitage (Allison Williams). While they at first seem accepting, if a little ignorant and awkward, Chris soon uncovers a shocking secret — as well as why the family has been so desperate to meet him.
If you haven’t seen it, look away now, as Get Out reveals that the family transplants the brains of older people into other people’s bodies, allowing them their preferred physical characteristics in a twisted quest for immortality. The reveal is a bone-chilling one and is indicative of how Peele is able to use horror tropes to comment on contemporary issues.
The final moments of Get Out sees Chris escape what the Armitage family has planned. Following a chaotic bloodbath that leaves the entire family dead and Rose bleeding out, Chris and his reliable pal Rod (Lil Rel Howery) drive off into the moonlight.
Get Out Leaves Plenty of Room for a Sequel
While the first Get Out works superbly well as a standalone story, it does leave several threads hanging. Did Rose really die or was she able to save herself somehow? After all, throughout Get Out, she proves herself to be nothing if not tenacious. Who was blamed for the massacre at the Armitage estate? Does anyone connected to the Armitage family know that Chris escaped? And will they continue to prey on people for their nefarious ends?
While there is no word on whether Get Out 2 will ever happen, this is not the first time that Jordan Peele has expressed his desire to return for more. "I love that universe and feel like there is more story to tell,” the filmmaker said in 2018. “I don't know what it is now, but there are some loose ends... you know the movie."
Until then, Jordan Peele will next tackle alien invaders in the upcoming Nope. Starring Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer, Nope begins when random objects fall from the sky and follows ranch-owning siblings OJ and Emerald Haywood as they attempt to capture video evidence of an unidentified flying object.
The first reactions to Nope have now emerged, and suggest that Peele has yet another hit on his hands. Nope is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 22, 2022, by Universal Pictures.
