Ghostbusters: Afterlife easily took the crown from Marvel Studios’ Eternals with a strong weekend box office debut. Sony is looking towards the upcoming holiday week to drum up more box office cash for the latest installment in the Ghostbusters franchise, and after a strong opening in the heartland, it looks like more and more families will be visiting movie theaters to celebrate Thanksgiving. Many schools in North America will have the entire week off, which will undoubtedly lead to more box office wins for Sony. As of this writing, Ghostbusters: Afterlife has earned $60 million globally.

The other big debut this weekend was Warner Bros.’ Will Smith movie King Richard. The movie was able to grab the fourth position with $5.7 million, but failed to live up to previous estimates. Many are already attributing the lackluster performance to the fact that the movie is currently available to stream on HBO Max, while Ghostbusters: Afterlife is only available to see in movie theaters. Adding to the fourth spot debut, King Richard isn’t open in as many theaters, though it did take in an additional $2.5 million overseas. Smith's performance has gained widespread acclaim, along with the movie's story.

Eternals dropped to number two this weekend after taking in $10.8 million. This brings the global total to $336.1 million. The latest from Marvel Studios has audiences and critics divided 80% and 47% Fresh, respectively. The movie’s exposition, runtime, pacing, and character development has been criticized by both audiences and critics. Clifford the Big Red Dog took the third position with $8.1 million, falling from its second position last weekend. As stated above, Warner Bros.’ King Richard debuted at number four.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune fell to number five this weekend after bringing in $3.6 million. To date, the latest big screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic has earned just over $367 million worldwide and leaves HBO Max after today. Venom: Let There be Carnage took the sixth spot with $2.77 million. Sony’s Venom sequel has largely been a hit with Marvel fans and has earned $454.6 million globally since debuting in theaters eight weeks ago. No Time to Die fell to number seven with $2.7 million, bringing its global total to $734 million in seven weeks.

Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch took the eighth position this weekend after taking in $970K. Anderson’s latest finds the director working with many familiar faces while receiving mixed reviews from viewers and critics. Ron’s Gone Wrong, which has received mostly positive reviews from viewers and critics, came in at number nine with $888K. Finally, Spencer took the tenth spot after bringing in $690K.
