Scream killer Ghostface has become a horror icon since their first appearance in Wes Craven’s 1996 genre-reviver. However, unlike many of the biggest and baddest cinema has to offer, Ghostface is one of the few who changes identity every movie and is ultimately just a human wearing a mask. As you would expect, this means that the knife-wielding killer has not always come off well against his victims, and has often ended up being comically on the receiving end of violence as well as dishing it out. Now a new compilation video set to the song ‘Hard Knock Life’ has put together a montage of Ghostface being punched, battered and falling over from throughout the Scream franchise. Check it out below.

Scream was released in 1996 and immediately rejuvenated the slasher genre that had been dormant for a number of years. The creation of horror master Wes Craven, the film spawned three sequels all starring Courteney Cox, Neve Campbell and David Arquette, all of which had a different killer, or in most cases killers. After Scream 4, the death of Craven seemed to mean the franchise would end there, but in 2021 the franchise returned once again, with its three original cast members once again facing off with a new murderer behind the white mask. Now Ghostface is ready to cause panic in a whole new playground as the franchise moves location for the first time to take Scream VI to New York City.

The Scream franchise has come a long way since 1996, and now it is branching out even more by moving the action from the suburban setting of the first five movies to the crowded streets of New York and that means Scream VI is setting itself up as the most unpredictable addition to the franchise yet.

The latest Scream movie will see Courteney Cox returning once again as Gale Weathers, and although Neve Campbell dropped out over a pay dispute, Hayden Panettiere will be reprising her Scream 4 role as Kirby Reed, and last year’s Scream survivors Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera will be back as Tara and Sam Carpenter respectively. Ortega recently talked about her role in the franchise, noting how she wanted to pay homage to original Scream “First Girl” Drew Barrymore. She said:

"I wanted to make it my own, but I also wanted to make sure that the acknowledgment and respect for Drew and Wes and Kevin was there and done. I know that people are very critical because that set such a standard, it being the first scene of the franchise and it being so iconic. It's something that I think the Scream community critiques a lot and is very hardcore, and I just didn't want to let anybody down."

Scream VI is being pitched as the most violent movie in the franchise, which is saying something, and this is likely not the last time we will see someone donning the Scream mask as a seventh movie is already being discussed. Scream VI is released in theaters on March 31, 2023.
