This summer will mark the end of an era with Better Call Saul airing its final six episodes. The end of the spinoff series will be bringing a conclusion to a story that first began with Breaking Bad, providing answers about Saul Goodman's (Bob Odenkirk) past while also finally revealing what ultimately becomes of him in the future. There are no plans at this time to develop any other spinoffs set in the Breaking Bad world.

But Giancarlo Esposito has not given up on returning as Gus Fring in his own spinoff series. He has been pretty vocal in the past about wanting to do a spinoff that centers on Gus and further explores his rise to power. Esposito spoke more about this idea in a new interview with James Corden, teasing that it very well could happen as Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan hinted to him that they're not finished just yet. He also spoke about exploring new territory with Gus in season 6 of Better Call Saul with the character facing such an unpredictable and dangerous foe.

"I'm a little choked up. I don't want to talk about it! It's over. It's going to be over. I never want to say... well, Vince Gilligan said to me, 'It's not over until it's over.' But what does that mean? Is that a clue? And for me, I think it may be a clue, because I take all of that as an actor, you take that really personally, like there could be something else. For me, I feel like I got a chance in season 6 to explore a more vulnerable, different Gustavo Fring... Lalo Salamanca is a threat to me, and I always control the chaos and steer what's happening, but in this season, I'm vulnerable, I'm nervous, I'm not the same Gustavo Fring you've ever seen before. So you get a more nuanced performance and a wider range of emotion behind Gus."

The Rise of Gus Could Be the Bridge Between Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad

Esposito goes on to express just how much he has loved being a part of the Breaking Bad world and doing so much with the Gus Fring character. It admittedly makes him sad to see the franchise come to its end, at least for now, but the actor remains optimistic about fans seeing Gus again in the future. Esposito explains that he has a "Rise of Gus" prequel idea in his head and he's holding onto it just in case Gilligan gives him that phone call.

"I feel honored, and enjoy and in wonder like a little kid that I've had the ability to be a part of the show in this way, and I hate to see it go. However, in my brain, there is another show. And that show is called: The Rise of Gus."

Many fans would certainly be open to seeing another series with Esposito's Gus Fring taking the lead, but introducing another prequel in this franchise could pose a problem. The cast just isn't getting any younger, and going back in time again for another prequel might be asking a lot for the fans with suspending their disbelief.

But perhaps that wouldn't be the direction The Rise of Gus would take. Let's keep in mind that Better Call Saul has just six episodes left with several major storylines that still need wrapped up. At this point in the timeline, we are also still four years away from the start of Breaking Bad. This means that there will inevitably be a lot of uncovered ground for that time period between the two shows, and maybe something like The Rise of Gus could be plugged right there in the middle of the two series, serving as a sequel to Better Call Saul and another prequel to Breaking Bad.

Better Call Saul returns to AMC and AMC+ with new episodes on July 11.
