Last November, we reported that Sony Pictures is finally moving forward with a sequel to their 2011 adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, entitled The Girl In the Spider's Web. However, this follow-up was being set up without director David Fincher or stars Daniel Craig (Mikael Blomkvist) and Rooney Mara (Lisbeth Salander). A report surfaced earlier this month that Don't Breathe director Fede Alvarez is being considered for this project, and today the director confirmed that he has signed on, and it will be his next project.

Fede Alvarez confirmed that The Girl In the Spider's Web will be his next project during an interview with ComingSoon.net. The studio decided to skip over author Stieg Larsson's remaining two novels, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, instead opting to adapt The Girl In the Spider's Web, a follow-up to Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy written by David Lagercrantz, which was published in 2015. Our report from last November revealed that Steven Knight (Allied) wrote the adapted screenplay.

The story centers on Blomkvist, who, late one night, receives a phone call from a source claiming to have information vital to the United States. The source has been in contact with a young female superhacker, a hacker resembling someone Blomkvist knows all too well. The implications are staggering. Blomkvist, in desperate need of a scoop for Millennium, turns to Salander for help. She, as usual, has her own agenda. The secret they are both chasing is at the center of a tangled web of spies, cybercriminals, and governments around the world, and someone is prepared to kill to protect it...

Fede Alvarez will be working with longtime collaborator Rodo Sayagues on The Girl In the Spider's Web. It hasn't been confirmed if they will both be rewriting the script originally written by Steven Knight, but they both said they were looking for ways to put their own spin on the story. It hasn't been confirmed when production may begin, or if Sony has issued a release date for the sequel at this time.

The original novels were first adapted into a Swedish movie trilogy which starred Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth Salander and Michael Nyqvist as Mikael Blomkvist. Fede Alvarez also confirmed that he and Rodo Sayagues are working on a sequel to their horror hit Don't Breathe, which Fede Alvarez would return to direct. Hopefully Sony will offer some new details about The Girl in the Spider's Web soon.
