Godzilla is the king of summer movie blockbusters! For a hot minute, anyway. Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are claiming the iconic giant lizard has pulled in the biggest opening day of the year with an estimated $38.5 million. This beats Captain America: The Winter Soldier, who pulled in $36.9 million this past April.

Godzilla is estimated to earn a little over $98 million over the course of its three day weekend, and it may even make it to the $100 million mark. Captain America: The Winter Soldier took in $95 million over the course of its three day weekend.

Godzilla's reign as the top opener of 2014 may be short lived, though. X-Men: Days of Future Past opens this coming weekend, May 23, for the Memorial Day holiday and is expected to pull in over $100 million. The film is already being received well by both critics and early audiences.

Godzilla currently has a B+ CinemaScore and is fresh with 73% at Rotten Tomatoes.
