The Monsterverse that brought the literal cinematic giants Godzilla and King Kong together on the big screen last year was set to end with the monster mash-up Godzilla vs. Kong. However, it looks like that won't be the case after a recent announcement that a Godzilla TV series is heading to Apple TV+. Set in the same joint universe as the most recent Legendary Pictures releases of Godzilla, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla vs. Kong, the series is currently going by the working title of Hourglass, but some new details have revealed when and where the series will be set concerning those other movies.

The new synopsis for the show reveals that the series will seemingly take place between the 2014 return of Godzilla and the King of the Monsters sequel and will focus on Monarch and how they, and the human race, deal with the knowledge of the Titans' existence in the world. The full synopsis reads, "Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the series explores one family's journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch."

From the details released, it seems that the series will be turning the focus away from Godzilla and to the humans who have to deal with his arrival. Although it seems likely that the series will feature the giant lizard in some way, perhaps fans shouldn't set their hearts on seeing a big monster battle playing out on screen, as that was covered in the movies and that means the series will act as something of an extension to the storytelling of the films. In a way, this could be good for the franchise, as there are a lot of gaps between the movies that the series could fill out in one way or another.

Monarch Has Been At The Center Of The Godzilla Monsterverse, And The Series Can Flesh It Out.

Monarch has been the organization that has tied together with the Monsterverse movies, so it is only fitting that they get their own project. As well as the new Godzilla-based show, Kong: Skull Island is also getting its own new series, which suggests that there is a lot more to come from the two franchises in the near future. Having watched Godzilla vs. Kong become one of the first big movies of the pandemic, as well as one of the most pirated titles of the year, there is clearly a lot of love still out there for the two most iconic movie monsters in history and that is not something that is going to be allowed to go to waste.

Godzilla was most recently seen in anime form in Godzilla: Singular Point, which arrived on Netflix towards the end of last year and gained a decent set of reviews and audience numbers. While that project was separate from the Monsterverse, it is a sign that Godzilla is here to stay, which can only be a good thing for fans of the Japanese beast.
