The King of All Monsters and his giant ape frenemy are getting ready to duke it out, as Godzilla Vs Kong is gearing up for production this October. Blair Witch director Adam Wingard was hired to helm the movie last year, which will see the Big Lizard from 2014's Godzilla and the legendary monkey from Kong: Skull Island go toe-to-toe with one another. Now, we have word that the movie is set to being filming this October in Atlanta, Georgia.

According to a new report, Godzilla vs. Kong will start production on October 1st in Atlanta, with filming set to last through February of 2019. That's only about four months of filming, but much of the work on a movie like this will be done in post-production, as it's very effects-heavy. It's going to take a lot to make sure the brawl between these two legendary monsters meets everyone's expectations. But that gives them plenty of time to finish the movie ahead of its May 22, 2020, release date. Plus, that will allow time for reshoots, if they're needed.

As for what to expect from Godzilla vs. Kong specifically? That's a little tough to say right now, as this is going to serve as a sequel to Godzilla 2, which comes out on March 22, 2019, and wrapped filming last year. We know that Godzilla is going to fight Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah in that movie and, given that he's got a date with King Kong in 2020, we can only assume he'll emerge victorious. Beyond that, it's a lot of guesswork. However, our own Julian Roman caught up with Adam Wingard last year, who confirmed that it will serve as a sequel to Godzilla 2 and that some of the characters from that movie will be returning for Godzilla vs. Kong.

"Technically it is a sequel to Godzilla and Kong. There is Godzilla 2, which they are filming right now. We have some of the cast that is from that one. This will probably be the most direct sequel to that movie. They are stacking them up. It's very exciting. We're still in the early phases of it."

Legendary Pictures is trying to put together one of the few cinematic universes in Hollywood right now that seems to be working. 2014's Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island are part of what has been dubbed the MonsterVerse. What makes it work so far as that these movies aren't shoehorning in connections. They're allowed to be their own thing with only loose connective tissue that actually helps the story. Let's just hope that Godzilla 2, which is directed by Michael Dougherty (Krampus) can do the same.

As of right now, there's no official casting information available for Godzilla vs. Kong, so we can't say for certain which characters from Godzilla 2 will be coming back for the epic monster showdown. production designer Tom Hammock, who worked with Adam Wingard on The Guest and Blair Witch, is also on board for Godzilla vs. Kong, according to Omega Underground's report. We'll be sure to keep you up to date as any new information on the project is made available.
