Godzilla Vs. Kong has been delayed by 8 months. The wait for Godzilla Vs Kong just got a whole lot longer as Warner Bros. has opted to push the release of the next entry in their so-called MonsterVerse by 2/3s of a year. For the time being, no official reason for the long delay has been revealed, but this comes mere months after Godzilla: King of the Monsters was released in theaters and managed to disappoint both critically and commercially. It seems the studio doesn't want to repeat the same mistakes, if they can be avoided.

According to a new report, Godzilla vs. Kong will now hit theaters on November 20, 2020. The movie had previously been slated to arrive on March 13, 2020. Godzilla Vs. Kong wrapped in April. Given that the previous release date was only four months away and we've had right next to nothing in the way of marketing for the movie, not even a teaser trailer, a delay seemed imminent. Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich even hinted previously that they might delay the epic monster showdown if need be to ensure they deliver the best movie possible.

On its previous date, there was no direct competition. However, Pixar's Onward was coming out the week prior and the following week sees the release of A Quiet Place 2. Given what happened to Godzilla: King of the Monsters, that seems like stiff competition, even though this is a blockbuster that seemingly has a lot going for it. The movie will see the Godzilla we were first introduced to in 2014 duking it out against the King Kong we met in 2017's Kong: Skull Island. And there is a chance we may even see MechaGodzilla. The new November 2020 date sees direct competition in the form of the sci-fi flick Samaritan and the romantic comedy Happiest Season.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters was positioned by Warner Bros. as a massive, early summer blockbuster. It doubled-down on the monster action, compared to its predecessor, by bringing in other classic Toho monsters such as King Ghidorah, Rodan and Mothra. However, critics didn't respond to what Michael Dougherty (Krampus) had to offer the franchise, as the movie was met with many poor reviews, currently boasting a 41 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Even though the audience rating is much better, currently sitting at 83 percent, word of mouth failed to catch on and the sequel topped out at $385 million worldwide at the box office, which is rough considering its $170 million budget.

Adam Wingard (Blair Witch) is at the helm for Godzilla vs. Kong. The cast includes Millie Bobby Brown, Julian Dennison, Brian Tyree Henry, Demian Bichir, Alexander Skarsgard, Eisa Gonzalez, Kyle Chandler, Jessica Henwick, Rebecca Hall and Lance Reddick. It's unclear if Warner Bros. will use the extra time to fit in some reshoots, or if they simply feel the November release date offers them a better shot at box office success.
