The nominations for the 79th Golden Globes have been revealed, with the announcement being live-streamed, for the first time, at goldenglobes.com and on the Golden Globes YouTube channel. Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) president Helen Hoehne and rapper turned actor turned all-around entertainer Snoop Dogg had the honors of making the announcement. It is definitely not surprising to see the hit series Only Murders in the Building appear in the list of nominations, after all, it's sitting among a very select few elite shows with a perfect 100% score on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. It is rather interesting, though, to see that both Steve Martin and Martin Short, the show's two lead male protagonists, have been nominated for Best Actor In a TV Series, especially given the history between the two.

The mystery-comedy series, also nominated for Best Television Series (Musical or Comedy), created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman premiered on Hulu on August 31, 2021 to universal critical acclaim. It follows three strangers played by Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez who share a, sometimes unhealthy, obsession with the same true crime podcast. After a suspicious death in their Upper West Side apartment building called The Arconia, the three neighbors decide to start their own podcast detailing their own investigation of the death after the police ruled it a suicide with no signs of foul play.

It is certainly not the only time Steven Martin and Martin Short have worked together, the two have a long and celebrated history. The first time they appeared on screen together was, in fact, as part of the Three Amigos in the now cult classic 1985 comedy of the same name along with Chevy Chase. They actually first met a year prior backstage at The New Show. Since then, the pair have gone on to become good friends and have worked together numerous times including recurring roles in the Father of the Bride franchise and as a comedy duo on several worldwide stand-up tours.

While the pair has never hidden their affection for each other as friends, there has also always been a fair bit of good natured ribbing between the two, with Steve Martin once cheekily saying of his pal “By the way, Martin Short is also the name I use when I check into a hotel and want to be anonymous,” while Martin Short has said to Steve Martin, “Thirty-five years later and you’re still The Jerk,” referencing Steve Martin's 1979 movie The Jerk.

This comradery with its friendly competition and banter is sure to have people eager to see how each of the two stars will react if one or the other should win the Golden Globe. It is by no means a guarantee, however, that either will win as they are up against some stiff competition from the likes of Antony Anderson for his role in Black-ish, Nicholas Hoult for his performance in The Great and Jason Sudekis for his role as Ted Lasso.

The 19th Golden Globes is set to take place on January 9, 2022.
