Fans of Good Trouble will be happy to know that the series will be returning for a fifth season. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Freeform has just put in the renewal for season 5. The renewal was announced at the virtual Television Critics Association for its summer press tour, and with the series heading into a fifth season, it is the second-longest running scripted original series at Freeform.

“Freeform is evolving with young adults because we are not about an age — Freeform is an attitude,” network president Tara Duncan is quoted as saying. “Series like Good Trouble — which I am happy to announce today is being picked up for its fifth season — and our flagship series Grown-ish and more recently Cruel Summer, Single Drunk Female, Everything’s Trash, and The Come Up, our newest series which we are paneling today.”

Good Trouble, a spinoff of The Fosters, stars Cierra Ramirez, Emma Hunton, Tommy Martinez, Sherry Cola, Zuri Adele, and Josh Pence. Joanna Johnson serves as showrunner and executive produces alongside Christine Sacani, Greg Gugliotta, Jennifer Lopez, Benny Medina, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, and Ramirez. Maia Mitchell and Beau Mirchoff departed the series in season 4 and won't be back for season 5.

Good Trouble Is Critically Acclaimed

At Rotten Tomatoes, Good Trouble holds a rare 100% score with positive reviews across the board from critics. Certainly, the series performing so well in this way has only helped its chances of continuing on at Freeform. With its season 5 renewal, Good Trouble will at least match its parent series in length, as The Fosters spanned for five seasons on the network. If Good Trouble continues to do well with season 5, there's always the chance Freeform will order a sixth season.

One big moment that came in season 4 was the exit of Maia Mitchell as Callie. The show's staffers had known that Mitchell was going to leave in season 4 and this gave them time to come up with a proper way to write Callie out of the story.

"In season 3, I went to talk to her and I was like, you know, ‘Come on, stay,’ and she was like, ‘I really feel like I need to change in my life,'” showrunner Joanna Johnson told TheWrap. “And she agreed – I said, ‘Will you still stay on for season 4 and do a couple of episodes because I want time to kind of write you out.’”

Of preparing to say goodbye to the actress and the character, Johnson added, “We all got very emotional during the table read for that episode... The two of us could [barely get through] the table read because that was when I really knew she was going to go. And I was, you know, devastated, not to have Maia on the show. But after a while you accept it and you have to move on.”

The season finale of Good Trouble will air on Freeform on Aug. 25, 2022.
