Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment are teaming up to develop a feature film based on the 60 Minutes segment Gospel for Teens, about a group of teens in Harlem who overcame their personal struggles through the art of gospel singing, according to Deadline.
Stephen Belber will write the script.
The 60 Minutes segment followed Lesley Stahl who spent a year trailing Vy Higginsen, an accomplished gospel singer who started a program for teens in Harlem with the intention of preserving the art form by introducing it to a young generation. Vy Higginsen expected her students to leave their problems at the door and focus on the music, but discovered that her most gifted kids were unable to separate themselves from their problems at home. Once Vy Higginsen helped her students reveal and deal with their problems, they soared.
