Fox's hit series Gotham has added a new series regular for Season 2, with actor Michael Chiklis signing on to play Captain Nathanial Barnes. The actor is certainly no stranger to playing a law enforcement officer, starring as Detective Vic Mackey in FX's cop drama The Shield for seven seasons. Unlike Vic Mackey, though, his new character Nathanial Barnes is certainly not a crooked cop, as he attempts to clean up the Gotham City Police Department. Here's what the show's producers told TV Line about Nathanial Barnes.

"(He) lands on the GCPD like a tornado, ripping out the dead wood of Gotham's police force. He is a law and order zealot; unafraid of making enemies - on either side of the law. For Gordon (Ben McKenzie), Barnes is a hero and a mentor, someone with whom he can share the burden of heroism. Captain Barnes proves himself to be a strong ally to Gordon... but one day he will make an equally powerful enemy."

Michael Chiklis joins other new Gotham Season 2 additions Jessica Lucas as Tabitha Galivan, a.k.a. Tigress, with James Frain portraying her brother Theo Galivan, a billionaire industrialist trying to seize control of Gotham. Natalie Alyn Lind also signed on to play Silver St. Cloud, who will be a potential new love interest for young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz). The series has also promoted Season 1 stars Morena Baccarin (Dr. Leslie Thompkins), Nicholas D'Agosto (Harvey Dent) and Chris Chalk to series regulars in Season 2.

Production is already under way on Season 2, and we have already seen our first look at The Joker (Cameron Monaghan) in action. The actor also "crashed" the show's Comic-Con panel earlier this month, posing as a fan who had a question for James Gordon. The cast and producers teased that there will be several new villains popping up this season, but aside from the Galivan siblings, no other characters have been confirmed.

Michael Chiklis most recently starred on the hit FX anthology series American Horror Story: Freak Show and in last year's big-screen football drama When the Game Stands Tall.
