Writer-director James Gunn has been hard at work on the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 screenplay for the past several months, with the filmmaker revealing in April that he has turned in a 70-page treatment for the sequel. With production scheduled to begin in February, the filmmaker revealed during a Q&A session on the live-streaming Periscope Twitter app, that he has also completed the first draft of the screenplay. He also added that he plans on finishing a revised draft before he heads to Colombia in June to shoot The Belco Experiment, which he is writing and producing, and that casting has already begun for new characters to be added in this sequel.

Of course, the filmmaker wouldn't divulge who any of these characters are, but he did specify that one main character will be joining the Guardians of the Galaxy team, alongside Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Groot (Vin Diesel) and Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper). The filmmaker revealed during the Q&A session that he has already spoken with one actor about playing a role he describes as "the new Guardian." James Gunn has said in the past that there will be two new additions to the team, with many assuming that one will be a character we've already met, possibly Michael Rooker's Yondu, and another we will see for the first time in the sequel.

James Gunn also reiterated during the Q&A that Star-Lord's father won't be J'son, like in the comic books, because the filmmaker revealed he never liked that character's story, and if they went with that plot, the movies would be too close to Star Wars. Naturally, he wouldn't divulge the identity of Star-Lord's father yet, but we know it will be an integral part of the story line.
