Earlier today, a rumor surfaced regarding the identity of Star-Lord's father in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which Heroic Hollywood claimed came from four independent sources. According to this report, the Marvel Comics hero Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel, is Star-Lord's mysterious father, but the site also said that they expected Marvel to deny the story. Earlier today, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn shot down this rumor through a statement on his Facebook page, where he boldly stated that this is the last time he will comment on any rumors regarding his sequel. And it should be noted that the filmmaker is notorious for not lying in press interviews or on social media. So what he has to say is probably true.

"All right. From this moment on I'm going to stop commenting on any rumors surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, because, eventually, someone is going to come up with a spoiler that has some truth to it. That said, the rumors surrounding Quill's parentage at the present moment are completely false, and aren't even close to the truth. I don't know how people come up with this stuff, but it certainly isn't through legitimate sources. Also, I get the desire to get "scoops" on character inclusion and casting choices, etc. But since when is a plot spoiler a "scoop"? Is this really what fandom wants to know? Plot details in movies ahead of time? I got in this business because I love movies, and I think most film journalists are the same way. And spoiling plot details doesn't add to the enjoyment of the film-going experience. So bravo to those folks out there who don't partake in this sort of thing. But, as I said, eventually someone will actually spoil some detail of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. So this will be my last comment squelching a rumor until May 2017. But if you do pick up on some plot detail between now and then, be aware, A) They are likely full of shit, as has been everyone so far who has claimed to have had inside info, and B) We're creating a film that doesn't rely on plot twists to be an enjoyable experience. They're only a very small part of what we're cooking up for you. James."

James Gunn has confirmed in the past that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will, in fact, reveal who Star-Lord's father is. In last year's blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy, Star-Lord's father was described as an angel, composed of light, who is part of a race that the Nova Corps hasn't seen in several years. This now-debunked rumor claims that Marvel may have altered Mar-Vell's comic book origins, turning him into one of the Inhumans, and that this character's introduction could help set up the Captain Marvel movie, which is slated for release in March 2019.

At this point, all we know about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for sure is that all of the Guardians will be back, Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Groot (Vin Diesel), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) and Dave Bautista. We reported last month that Pom Klementieff has come aboard as the first new cast member, with another rumor claiming that she is Mantis. With production scheduled to begin February 2016 in Atlanta, hopefully we'll hear more about new cast members very soon.

You may also recall just last week, Bradley Cooper seemingly let a big spoiler slip, while doing press for Burnt, where he claimed that Thanos is actually Star-Lord's father, which was also later debunked by James Gunn himself. There will surely be a spate of rumors surfacing between now and the May 5, 2017 release date, but this will be the last time James Gunn speaks about any of the unconfirmed plot details and characters in the sequel. Are you glad that Mar-Vell isn't Star-Lord's father? Who do you think it could be?
