After months of waiting, Marvel Studios has finally released the first official teaser for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It was clear that fans were hyped about the movie, but it was a little hard to predict that people would be quite this excited. The teaser has a pretty impressive claim to fame, as it now holds the record for the most views in a single day for a Marvel Studios movie.

Director James Gunn took to his Facebook page to share the news and to thank his very many Marvel fans for the reaction to the teaser. According to his post, the first teaser for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 amassed 81 million views in the first 24 hours, which is pretty massive. Here is what he had to say about it.

"With 81 million views in its first 24 hours, the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Teaser Trailer is the SECOND BIGGEST TEASER TRAILER EVER (after Beauty and the Beast), and the biggest Marvel Studios Teaser ever! No kidding - I'm, like, floored. Thank all of you so very much for watching it (more than once), and sharing it, and welcoming Baby Groot and Mantis with open arms. Thanks for all your amazing reactions. Thanks to the wonderful folks at CCXP in Brazil where we debuted the trailer. And finally (yes, I know, it's starting to become like I'm accepting an award - sorry BUT) HUGE THANKS to the smart and kind marketing folks at Marvel and Disney who put up with all my eccentricities during the teaser editing process. Honestly. You guys can't imagine what they deal with. I'm a maniac. Now they're gonna have to deal with it again as we prep the FULL TRAILER..."

Marvel first showed some footage from the movie over the summer at San Diego Comic-Con. That footage still hasn't made its way online, showing Kurt Russell as Ego The Living Planet, which is absent from this first teaser. James Gunn also released a "sneak peak" back in October that revealed the first footage released to the public. In this trailer, we get our first look at Mantis, and we also got a whole lot of Baby Groot, which the internet has reacted to very positively and should be a huge part of the appeal heading into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. James Gunn also noted that the song used in the teaser, "Fox On The Run" by Sweet, is currently number 1 on iTunes. The first teaser for the original Guardians of the Galaxy had a similar effect on "Hooked On a Feeling" by Blue Swede.

The first Guardians of the Galaxy was a massive hit to the tune of $773 million worldwide in 2014, but many didn't think it would be considering how obscure these characters were even to hardcore comic book fans. Now, just a few years later, a walking, talking tree named Groot is a household name and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is easily one of the most anticipated movies of 2017. Perhaps only behind Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast, which as James Gunn stated, currently holds the teaser trailer views record for a 24-hour period.

The cast for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 includes returning cast members in the form of Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot (even though Groot is a baby this time around) and Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket. Several new cast members are joining up with the Guardians this time around, including Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russelland Elizabeth Debicki. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was written and directed by James Gunn and is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
