For anyone who has ever wanted to know what Aquaman might look like as Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy, those prayers have been answered. Before he went on to score his gig as Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman in the DC universe, Jason Momoa was actually up for the role of Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy. It got far enough that, at one point, some concept art was done for the character using Momoa as inspiration, and that art has made its way online.
The art comes from Charlie Wen who shared two images of Drax, looking radically different than the version we came to know in James Gunn's 2014 Marvel hit. Wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista ultimately landed the role and what we get was a relatively simple, hulking version of the Guardians team member. However, as Wen reveals, things would have been quite a bit different had Jason Momoa landed the role. Here's what he had to say about it in his post.
"Jason Momoa was almost Drax (before his #aquaman days;)! He also had a great audition that deftly displayed his toughness and double blades handles. But in short, Bautista was definitely the right choice, he had a perfect blend of natural quirk and braun. This was an early sketch to explore the prospect of Momoa taking on the character. The comicbook version was extremely close to another character that I designed called Kratos for #godofwar , so...I tried to steer Drax clear of it. justinjsweet did the super cool final concept design for Drax!"
As for the images, Drax looks more slender. More quietly imposing. The more interesting of the two images has Drax in a red shirt and black jacket, looking a little bit more like the final version of Star-Lord. In any event, it's fascinating to see just how much the character evolved before the version we know and love made it to screen. That ended up working out well, as fans really took to Dave Bautista's version of the character, who has since appeared in both Guardians solo movies and last year's Avengers: Infinity War. Bautista is also set to reprise his role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, whenever that ends up getting off the ground.
But nobody needs to shed any tears for Jason Momoa. He's doing just fine these days. Aquaman has been absolutely crushing it at the box office since its release and will be the first release from DC Films to cross the $1 billion mark at the box office. That's something neither of the Guardians movies can say. Plus, Warner Bros. is already in the early stages of working on a sequel. Now, Momoa gets to lead his own franchise and he's more or less the savior of the DC universe. Both he and Dave Bautista did quite well for themselves.
