Warning: This article contains MAJOR spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was always expected to bring to an end the story of the original Guardians team. With several stars of the franchise having already made it clear that they will not be returning, the real question has always been what is next for the ragtag team of cosmic defenders? With the film finally playing in theaters, the two post-credits scenes that accompany the feature have answered some of these questions and teased the next steps of several characters.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ends the Marvel story for a number of popular characters, and that instigates a lot of changes for the team’s future. This includes Rocket Raccoon being made leader of the team by Star-Lord. In the mid-credits scene it becomes apparent that the gun-loving Raccoon has wasted no time in assembling his own team, which includes a now seemingly fully-grown Groot, Adam Warlock, Kraglin, Phyla and Cosmo the Space Dog, along with their pet Blurp. .

The scene finds Rocket and his new team on a planet to protect aliens called Krylorians from some nasty beasts. The scene lays the seeds for the new Guardians of the Galaxy, which includes the new-to-the-MCU Phyla, who in the comics is the daughter of Mar-Vell – the original Captain Marvel – but in the MCU’s iteration is introduced as one of the creations of the High Evolutionary. It seems likely that she joins characters like Charlize Theron’s Clea and Harry Styles’ Eros, who received a very brief introduction recently as a prelude to something more in future installments.

What Happens In The Post-Credits Scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?

The second credits scene involves Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill, who after being reunited with his grandfather at the end of the movie is seen having breakfast and discussing the mundane chores of tending to a neighbor's lawn. The scene see’s Quill’s grandfather reading a newspaper, which happens to carry the story of Kevin Bacon making claims of alien abduction – a reference to the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, and a nice little kick to end James Gunn’s Guardians story with a little smile.

However, as the screen cuts to black, the words “The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return” appear on-screen, suggesting that Pratt is not done with his character yet. Of course, there is no way of knowing whether he will be back with the Guardians in another adventure, or whether he could get his own spin-off Disney+ series considering there is a comic book arc that was titled The Legendary Star-Lord, which could be on someone’s radar.

When it comes to the next appearances of the Guardians, like many other heroes there are currently no plans announced for more solo movies or projects, but they are expected to feature in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, and it is worth pointing out that there are four untitled movies currently pencilled in around the release of those movies as well as Disney+ slots to fill. In short, the Guardians of the Galaxy will also be returning somewhere in the future.
