After appearing in mostly dramas for the better part of a decade, acclaimed actor Sean Penn takes on a completely different kind of role than we're used to seeing in The Gunman. Pierre Morel, director of the fan-favorite Taken starring Liam Neeson, is ready to turn Penn into an action star in this adaptation of Jean-Patrick Manchette's 'The Prone Gunman'. Open Road Films has released the first trailer and poster for this thriller.

Sean Penn stars as Jim Terrier, an international operative who is betrayed by the organization he works for, and must go on the run in a relentless game of cat and mouse across Europe. While Penn is seen picking up a gun for some intense action scenes, his presence brings a new and unique spin to the genre unlike anything we've ever seen before. Prepare yourself, you may not be ready!

The Gunman has a great ensemble cast, which includes Javier Bardem, Idris Elba, Ray Winstone and Mark Rylance. This may be a cut above your average shoot 'em up, but that also might make for a slightly more slowed down pace than your avenger Jason Statham outing. Check out the first official footage, along with an image that shows a quite tough Sean Penn brandishing his weapon. The film hits theaters this spring.
