Horror legend and Halloween creator John Carpenter has teased the end of the legacy trilogy, describing it as a “departure” from the rest of the slasher franchise. Speaking with SyFy, Carpenter discussed working with director David Gordon Green on Halloween Ends, with his description of the trilogy finale as a change from the norm just left to hang there mysteriously...
"Well, it's Halloween, and it ends. You'll see it's a departure from the others. It's interesting. Dave is a really good director. I love working with him."
While John Carpenter does not offer any further details regarding how Halloween Ends will be a departure, there have been some hints as to how the legacy sequel will approach the long-running franchise. One such element will be the setting of Halloween Ends, which will leap forward in time from where the reboot franchise has found itself for the last two outings. "There is a time jump,” director David Gordon Green revealed recently. “It gets back onto a contemporary timeline, so it'll jump four years."
Something else that could set Halloween Ends apart from the wider franchise is Green’s approach to the movie as an intimate coming-of-age story, with Andi Matichak as Allyson Nelson expected to play a central role in proceedings. "There's not a lot of games in it, there's not a lot of wittiness and retro joy,” Green explained. “It's kind of a coming-of-age film, and it's a very different tone. And that's what excited me about it, is to have the three chapters that I've been involved in be very different from each other. They are all there to honor Carpenter, but aren't necessary just emulating him."
Michael Myers Will Return Later This Year in Halloween Ends
While plot details for Halloween Ends remain largely unknown at this time, considering the final moments of its predecessor Halloween Kills, Halloween Ends will no doubt find Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode on a collision course of revenge with Michael Myers.
Despite what the title suggests, Halloween Ends will not necessarily mark the final appearance from horror movie icon Michael Myers. Blumhouse Productions CEO and producer Jason Blum recently revealed that, while fans had assumed this would be the final Halloween movie (at least for a while) it is only the last outing from this studio. "I didn't say it's gonna be the last Halloween movie. It's our last Halloween movie,” Blum explained. “We have no more rights to make any more Halloween, so it goes back to Malek [Akkad] and what he does, only he knows, but we are done. This is our last one, and I think people will be very happy."
Directed by David Gordon Green and written by Green, Danny McBride, Paul Brad Logan and Chris Bernier, Halloween Ends will see Jamie Lee Curtis reprise the role of Laurie Strode, a role she has played since the very first Halloween way, way back in 1978, for what it expected to be the eighth and final time. The rest of the cast will be comprised of Andi Matichak, Will Patton, James Jude Courtney, Kyle Richards, Michael O'Leary, and Omar Dorsey.
Halloween Ends is scheduled to be released on October 14, 2022, by Universal Pictures.
