With the release a little less than two years away, we are likely going to start hearing a lot more about Han Solo: A Star Wars Story. We know that Alden Ehrenreich will be playing a younger version of the character, but beyond that, we know next to nothing. However, thanks to a recent report from The Wrap, it looks we now know that Lando Calrissian will also be appearing in the movie. Not only that, but we may know who Disney and Lucasfilm want to play him.
According to Devin Faraci at Birth.Movies.Death, Community and The Martian star Donald Glover is the studio's top choice to play the part. Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller auditioned thousands of actors for the part of Han Solo, and wound up going with their very first choice. So, it looks like they aren't going to go through such a rigorous process to cast a young Lando. It is unclear at the moment if the studio has made an official offer to Glover yet.
The report from The Wrap stated that the filmmakers are casting the role under the codename 'Chance," which is likely in reference to his love of gambling. Perhaps we are going to see how Han Solo manages to win the Millennium Falcon from Lando Calrissian? Star Wars lore tells us that the two are old gambling buddies, and that is why they were so familiar with one another in Empire Strikes Back, but is also why Han has held reservations about Lando.
The young Han Solo movie is being written by Lawrence Kasdan, who helped write the scripts for Empire, Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. He will be working alongside his son Jon Kasdan. Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are best known for The LEGO Movie and the first two 21 Jump Street movies. They are also responsible for Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
Donald Glover is quite busy these days, as he is currently gearing up for the release of his new FX show Atlanta, which is getting quite a bit of buzz at the moment. There have also been persistent rumors that he will be dropping a new Childish Gambino album at some point this year, but that has yet to be confirmed. Not only that, but he has taken on an unspecified role in Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming. He is clearly very busy and picks his projects very carefully. But, since he is already working with Marvel Studios, he likely has a good relationship with the studio and that could help open the door for this casting to happen.
The Han Solo movie will be the second Star Wars stand-alone movie from Disney, following the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story this December. The character of Lando Calrissian has already popped up in the new Star Wars canon, as Billy Dee Williams returned to voice the character in a couple of episodes of the Disney XD series Star Wars Rebels. Will Donald Glover be the one to finally bring him back to the big screen for us? If Disney has their way, he very well may be. The young Han Solo movie is set for release on May 25, 2018.
