/hansel-gretel-witch-hunters-2-story-cast-renner-arterton/Earlier this week, news broke that writer-director Tommy Wirkola had finished the script for Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2, but he was unsure whether or not star of the original, Jeremy Renner, would be able to return. Now, Cinema Blend has reached out to the actor for his answer, and while he doesn't know if he can squeeze this sequel into his schedule, he wouldn't balk at returning to the role of Hansel.

Jeremy Renner is not signed for a sequel. When Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters came out, it was not considered to be a franchise contender, and was even moved by the studio from its original March 2012 release date to January of last year, which is viewed as a dumping ground for films that are potential money losers. The movie proved to be a hit, though, pulling in $226 million worldwide from a $50 million production budget. A sequel was green lit, but no three-movie contracts were ever set in place for either Jeremy Renner or his co-star Gemma Arterton, who also may not return depending on her availability.

When asked if he'd like to return for the franchise sequel, Jeremy Renner stated:

"I don't have any problem with it. Yeah. It was a lot of fun. It was fun to do that movie, and just have a ball."

But then he went onto explain the reality of the situation. When asked if he was contractually obligated to appear in the next installment, he stated:

"Not that I'm aware of, no. I know they're going to make one. I know they're writing a script. And that's when they will probably engage with any talent. It's ultimately going to come down to...I know they have a release date and they really want to get it out there..but I have to have the time. I'm only one man, right? And then also [Gemma Arterton]'s availability. It'll come down to availability I'm sure."

Jeremy Renner just finished his role as Hawkeye in the Marvel sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron and it is heavily rumored that he may reprise the role in Captain America 3. He just started shooting Mission: Impossible 5 this past month. He was scheduled to star in a sequel to The Bourne Legacy next, but that may be on hold as Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass prepare for their return to the franchise. Could this open up space in Jeremy Renner's schedule?
