Jam City and J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World have released a new gameplay trailer for the upcoming mobile game Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery, while also announcing that Google Play pre-registration has opened. While an official launch date has not yet been announced, those who pre-register will be the first to be notified when the game launches on both Google Play and the App Store. Here's what Jam City CEO and co-founder Chris Wolfe had to say in a brief statement.
"We are grateful to the fans who have made Hogwarts Mystery one of the most anticipated mobile games of 2018. We're thrilled to open Google pre-registration and share a new sneak peek at how this game will let fans create their own character and enter Hogwarts as a student for the first time."
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is the first mobile game where players can create their own character and experience life as a Hogwarts student. In the narrative adventure with RPG elements, players will create a personalized student avatar, attend classes, learn magical skills, and form friendships or rivalries with other students. In the game, players make pivotal decisions that influence their character's story arc at Hogwarts. The game features a new encounter system where player decisions and actions impact their quests, allowing Harry Potter fans to create their own legacy as a witch or wizard.
The mobile game is set in the 1980s, during the period of time between the birth of Harry Potter and his enrollment at Hogwarts. While that means this game won't feature Harry, or his friends Hermione Granger or Ron Weasley, there will a number of familiar faces popping up in this game, some of whom are seen in this new trailer. The trailer features Bill Weasley, the older brother of Ron, along with the beloved Hogwarts gamekeeper Hagrid, Professor Sprout, Professor Flitwick and even Professor Dumbledore.
The release of this mobile game will happen sometime this spring, which may or may not coincide with the Broadway debut of the first ever Harry Potter stage show, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. While the stage play continues to sell out at the Palace Theater in the U.K., Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will make its Broadway debut March 16 when previews open, with the official debut on April 22. Then later this year, fans can return to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter on the big screen when Fantastic Beasts 2: The Crimes of Grindelwald hits theaters on November 16, 2018. This big screen adventure will shift the action from New York City to Paris, with Johnny Depp starring as Grindelwald and Jude Law portraying the young Albus Dumbledore. This will be the second of five adventures in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them 3 slated to arrive on November 20, 2020, although no specific dates were given for the final two adventures yet.
