HBO Max’s Harry Potter: Reunion is debuting New Year’s Day and ahead of its premiere, the channel has released an official look at the return of the iconic trio from the original cast. The trio, including, the man himself, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint), and Hermoine Granger (Emma Watson) sitting in a nostalgic aura of the old Gryffindor common room. It’s the same room where the trio (and a number of characters from the films) have shared moments of friendship, designed plans, and broken countless rules in their quest to defeat Voldemort and unravel conspiracies against their home away from home, that is, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The first look poster of the lead cast of the Harry Potter film hints at a personal coffee table conversation between the actors amongst themselves without a host.

Earlier, HBO Max had released an official trailer for the reunion, as well as the list of all actors from the Harry Potter Series that will make an appearance at the reunion. The Harry Potter Franchise, based on the book series of the same name by J.K. Rowling, has successfully kicked off a shared cinematic universe of its own, called Wizarding World, comprising of an additional series of prequels, Fantastic Beasts, and an award-winning play, The Cursed Child. Though the play has never been adapted into the film, director Chris Columbus, who helmed the first film in the franchise, The Philosopher’s Stone, has expressed his desire to direct a film based on that play. And now, with the upcoming reunion, there would be another addition to this magical world.

Besides Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and Daniel Radcliffe, there are a bunch of actors who’ll be present at the reunion to appear for interviews and share behind-the-scenes memories and moments from their experiences on the sets of all those films. Cast members confirmed to appear are Tom Felton, Jason Isaacs, Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Robbie Coltrane, Gary Oldman, James Phelps, Oliver Phelps, Mark Williams, Bonnie Wright, Alfred Enoch, Matthew Lewis, and Evanna Lynch.

In a surprising move, HBO Max has not included the creator of the franchise and author of the original books, J.K. Rowling in the list of guests for the reunion. The writer has been under constant criticism from fans due to her recent social media posts. She is still involved in the franchise though as both co-producer and screenwriter for Fantastic Beasts films, the third installment of which will release in 2022.

Harry Potter, over the years, has gained immense popularity, and the films have made the character and the Wizarding World an international phenomenon. The franchise now stands at a total worldwide gross of $7.7B from theatrical runs, placing it amidst successful film franchises like Star Wars and Marvel Cinematic Universe. Harry Potter Reunion would be HBO Max’s second special event after last year’s F.R.I.E.N.D.S: The Reunion, which garnered the streaming platform a whole lot of subscribers. Though it won’t be the last project in the franchise, it would surely bring decades-old memories back and would surely look into the legacy of the stories those films told.

Harry Potter Reunion will stream exclusively on HBO Max on January 1, 2022.
