Warner Bros. Discovery plans on putting some serious effort into their tentpole IPs and will pay particular attention to expanding the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels spoke of the Harry Potter franchise during a recent panel at Morgan Stanley's investor conference (via Variety), and declared how the success of the video game Hogwarts Legacy demonstrates that audiences are ready to delve deeper into the Wizarding World beyond just Harry Potter.

"Take Harry Potter as an example, the Wizarding World, the fact that we are enjoying this massive success with the Hogwarts Legacy launch, 12 years after the last film came out, shows that there is so much opportunity and we're only just starting to expand that. We've got the new Harry Potter tour coming up in Tokyo in the middle of the year. Long story short, I think this one-company approach, great leadership in the individual business units, but coordinated franchise management is probably one of the biggest opportunities the company has."

Based on the novels written by the now divisive author J. K. Rowling, the Harry Potter movie series first began in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (or Sorcerer's Stone, if you prefer) back in 2001. Lasting a total of eight movies, the series came to an end in 2011 with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. The series did well to grow and mature with its target audience, and was met with critical acclaim, major success at the box office, and was nominated for a total of 12 Academy Awards.

Sadly, this success was not reflected by the studio’s first attempt to spawn a Harry Potter spinoff, with the Fantastic Beasts franchise initially planned as five movies. Unfortunately, due to the mixed critical reception and comparative low box office gross, it’s looking increasingly likely that the Fantastic Beasts saga will end with last year’s Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.

So how will Warner Bros. Discovery expand the Wizarding World?

The most obvious, and arguably the one that will generate the most interest from audiences, would be to adapt the hugely successful stage play Harry Potter & the Cursed Child into either several movies or a television series.

Written by Jack Thorne, based on an original story written by J. K. Rowling, John Tiffany, and Thorne, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child premiered back in 2016, and picks up nineteen years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The story follows Harry Potter, now Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic, and his younger son, Albus Severus Potter, who is about to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and Albus’ friendship with the son of Draco Malfoy, Scorpius.

The play was received well by critics, though fans of the series have their issues with how some of the lore was handled, with rumors persisting that Warner Bros. is eager to turn the play into a cinematic sequel.
