Though Luck was renewed for a second season, with new episodes set to air in January of 2013, the HBO series about horse racing has been canceled due to the probability of accidents on set.

It was announced earlier today that a third horse was injured on set and had to be euthanized Tuesday morning during production. The accident is currently being investigated. It is said that the horse was being led to its stable at the Santa Anita racetrack by a groom when it reared and fell back, injuring its head.

The humane group that oversees Hollywood and its use of animals demanded that all production involving horses be shut down, which has led to the cancellation of the series.

HBO sent the following statement.

"It is with heartbreak that executive producers David Milch and Michael Mann together with HBO have decided to cease all future production on the series Luck.

Safety is always of paramount concern. We maintained the highest safety standards throughout production, higher in fact than any protocols existing in horseracing anywhere with many fewer incidents than occur in racing or than befall horses normally in barns at night or pastures. While we maintained the highest safety standards possible, accidents unfortunately happen and it is impossible to guarantee they won't in the future. Accordingly, we have reached this difficult decision.

We are immensely proud of this series, the writing, the acting, the filmmaking, the celebration of the culture of horses, and everyone involved in its creation."

David Milch and Michael Mann released the following statement:

"The two of us loved this series, loved the cast, crew and writers. This has been a tremendous collaboration and one that we plan to continue in the future."

During the production of Luck Season 1, two horses were injured during production on a couple of different racing scenes, and had to be put down. Production was to be shut down at that time, but new protocols were put in place that proved affective, and shooting resumed.

It is not known at this time how much of Luck's second season was filmed, or if that footage will ever be seen.
