HBO Max has recently announced that the platform will not be renewing Head of the Class for a second season. The reboot of the late '80s sitcom recently premiered on the platform last month, and has received pretty average reviews so far (67% on Rotten Tomatoes). Warner Bros. had released 10 episodes of the multi-camera series on November 4.

An HBO Max spokesperson provided the following statement in an interview with Deadline.

We will not be moving forward with a second season of Head of the Class... We were grateful to work with Bill (Lawrence, producer), Amy (Pocha, executive producer/showrunner) and Seth (Cohen, Showrunner) to bring back such an iconic series, and we thank them and the terrific cast for their hard work and dedication.

The high-school comedy is the second original show to get canceled on HBO Max, after yet another teen show Generations. Head of the Class follows the storyline from the 1986-91 run created by Rich Eustis & Michael Elias that aired on ABC. The show revolves around a group of overachieving high school students and their young teacher Alicia Adams, who takes over the honors program and urges the students to focus less on grades and more on experiencing life.

The reboot stars Isabella Gomez, the Imagen Award-winner best known for her roles in One Day at a Time and Big Hero 6: The Series, as the aforementioned teacher. A talented young actress, Gomez also stars in the upcoming drama film Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, based on the eponymous novel written by Benjamin Alire Sáenz.

The cast of the Head of the Class reboot includes Jorge Diaz as Elliot Olsen, Jolie Hoang Rappaport as Makayla Washington, Gavin Lewis as Luke Burrows, Dior Goodjohn as Robyn Rook, Brandon Severs Terrell Smith, Adrian Matthew Escalona as Miles Mendelson, and Katie Beth Hall as Sarah Watson. Robin Givens, part of the cast of the original run, guest stars in the show reprising her role as Darlene. The Scrubs and Clone High star Christa Miller stars in the show as Principal Maris.

Head of the Class is executive produced by Bill Lawrence, Amy Pocha, and Seth Cohen along with Jeff Ingold for Doozer, Phill Lewis and Bill Callahan. Pocha and Cohen also wrote the pilot episode for the series (from Doozer Productions, in association with Warner Bros. Television), which Lewis directed. Liza Katzer of Doozer Production served as the co-executive producer of the show.

The original Head of the Class aired on ABC from 1986 to 1991, airing for five seasons and 114 episodes. It follows a group of gifted students at Millard Fillmore High School in Manhattan along with their history teacher Charlie Moore (Howard Hesseman). In the final season, Hesseman left with Billy Connolly coming in as teacher Billy MacGregor. After that Head of the Class show ended, Connolly appeared in a spinoff series Billy, but it was short-lived. Whether it comes to a spinoff series or a new reboot decades later, maybe there's just no matching the success of the original.
