Following the end of Game of Thrones it seemed that we were about to be flooded with spin-offs galore with numerous shows announced as being in development. However, since then a number of these have fallen by the wayside and so far only the imminent House of the Dragon show is known to be definitely coming. That being said, according to a report by SlashFilm, HBO’s Vice President of Original Programming Kara Buckley appeared at ATX Television Festival and revealed that are still plenty of plans coming to the Game of Thrones Universe, but only when the time and content is right.
"We developed a lot of ideas, we were still developing a lot of ideas, and I think we're really excited about the one that will air later this summer. But, we don't feel the need to make another one unless it feels really creatively exciting to us. That's my job, at least. And the team that I'm on, that's what we're told to focus on."
HBO have been eager to add to their many IPs, but it seems that just like many other networks or streamers there are cutbacks being made and a sense of quality over quantity. That could mean that we don’t see a sudden never-ending stream of Game of Thrones shows, but more a steady flow of them over a number of years. After fan reactions to the main series’ final season, it is not surprising that the content has be compelling before they go ahead and put the Game of Thrones name on it.
House of The Dragon Could Restore Some Fan Faith In Game of Thrones
There have been mixed reactions to some of the trailer footage but of course it is down to the series itself to make fans sit up and take notice. The new show is obviously set in the same Game of Thrones world, but in time long before anything we have seen before. The details of the show can be seen in the official synopsis that reads:
"The prequel series finds the Targaryen dynasty at the absolute apex of its power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke. Most empires-real and imagined-crumble from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens, their slow fall begins almost 193 years before the events of Game of Thrones, when King Viserys Targaryen breaks with a century of tradition by naming his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne. But when Viserys later fathers a son, the court is shocked when Rhaenyra retains her status as his heir, and seeds of division sow friction across the realm."
Based on the novel Fire & Blood by author George R. R. Martin, it is not surprising that the Game of Thrones creator is hoping for good things from the series, particularly how it performs against another big fantasy series coming soon. In a previous interview he said:
"I hope both shows succeed. Yeah, I'm competitive enough, I hope we succeed more. If they win six Emmy's, and I hope they do, I hope we win seven. But nonetheless it's good for fantasy, I love fantasy, I love science-fiction."
House of The Dragon comes to HBO on Aug. 21, with Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series arriving a couple of weeks later. All in all, this fall is a good time to be a fan of fantasy.
